Stick around as we dive into must-know tips and tricks for a budget-friendly escape that you’ll brag about to your friends.
Ready to uncover how you can enjoy the treasures of Key West on a dime? Let’s get into it–you won’t want to miss out!

Off-Peak Travel: Secret to Savings
Your wallet will thank you when you embrace off-peak travel to Key West. The magic lies in its timing.
Plan your visit between September and November when the tropical charm remains but the prices take a dip.
Just be aware that this is also the end of hurricane season (June-November), so be sure to book with travel insurance if you plan to visit around this time.
With that said, many people avoid visiting Florida around this time, so it can be a great time to visit.
March through May is also an ideal time to visit. Winter is the peak season and most expensive, so March to May is a time when the crowds and prices start to die down a bit.
It’s also cooler during this time and avoids the summer humidity and heat.
Fewer tourists mean prime spots are less crowded, offering up deals you often dream about.
Imagine securing discounted hotel rates and restaurant meals, as businesses entice visitors during quieter times.
Plus, catching flights and travel packages on the less expensive side is like hitting the jackpot for budget travelers.
One delightful discovery is how locals go the extra mile to entice visitors, offering incentives you’d never thought possible.
For example, you might find promotions for popular attractions, meaning you get a needed dose of adventure without the splurge.
Trust me, seeing Key West without the usual hustle and bustle is worth knowing!

Affordable Accommodations
Fancy beachfront resorts might lure travelers initially, but those in the know opt for cozy, budget-friendly lodgings.
Key West offers charming bed and breakfasts, quaint inns, and even budget chains that fit the mold perfectly.
During my recent trip to the Florida Keys, I actually stayed in Marathon, which is just a little over an hour away.
It may not be around the atmosphere and excitement of Duval Street, but it allowed my family and me to save some money.
Airbnbs are also a fantastic alternative to slashing accommodation costs.
My family stayed in an Airbnb in Duck Key, so they were able to keep their costs low by staying together and splitting the cost.
If you’d like to mingle with fellow travelers, the hostels here, known for their friendly stays, make an excellent choice without the hefty price tag.

Cheap Dining Options With Local Flair
As a foodie, the Key West food scene had me loving its variety of amazing foods.
But I still try to save money on food, especially when dining as a family.
Street food and food trucks here are a treasure trove. You can enjoy the flavors of the Keys without the need for a hefty bill.
Some of the best food trucks here are Floridita Food Truck and One Love Food Truck.
You can see more about the Key West Food trucks here.
Snack on conch fritters, tacos, and indulge in some Cuban sandwiches, and top it off with a piece of key lime pie.
When dining at a must-try restaurant becomes a priority, look to lunch menus for budget-friendly deals.
Embrace dinner time as an opportunity to unwind at happy hours, where tantalizing appetizers and drinks come heavily discounted.

Free and Low-Cost Activities
The outdoors is a perfect playground when you’re in Key West. Walking along white sandy beaches and biking around scenic routes comes at no cost, perfect for soaking in the island’s charm.
Sunset celebrations at Mallory Square are a must-see, yet they’re absolutely free!
Local artists, street performers, and musicians turn the space into a lively show as the sun goes down.
It’s one of my favorite budget activities in Key West.
Consider exploring the fascinating history and art of Ernest Hemingway’s house by taking advantage of discounted entry times.
Likewise, you can rent kayaks or paddleboards for a morning adventure without straining the budget.
Blending relaxation with adventure in Key West? Priceless.
Here are some free and cheap attractions we found while in the Florida Keys:
The beach at Southernmost Point Beach Cafe (awesome beach!)
Southernmost Point Buoy (iconic photo spot!)
The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory- there is an entry fee, but it’s great to visit if you’re into butterflies and nature.
Final Thoughts
As you can see, Key West is an awesome place to visit, even if you’re on a budget and looking to save money!
From the Southernmost Point Buoy to the beach at Southernmost Beach Cafe, there are free things to do here.
You can also save on accommodations if you plan right and travel in the slow season.
Safe travels!
