Over the years, I’ve driven most of these, some multiple times, and each one offers something different.

1. The Overseas Highway (U.S. 1) – Miami to Key West
There’s no drive in the U.S. quite like the Overseas Highway.
Stretching 113 miles across the Florida Keys, this route connects island after island with a series of bridges, including the legendary Seven Mile Bridge.
Top Stops:
Key Largo is the gateway to the Keys and home to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, where you can snorkel or take a glass-bottom boat tour.
Islamorada is great for grabbing drinks at Florida Keys Brewing Company or hand-feeding massive tarpon at Robbie’s Marina.
Marathon has family-friendly stops like Curry Hammock State Park and the Turtle Hospital, which is well worth a visit.
Key West is the grand finale—filled with color, live music, and history. Don’t miss the Butterfly Conservatory, Southernmost Point, and the nightly street performers at Mallory Square.

2. A1A – St. Augustine to Daytona Beach
This stretch along Florida’s Atlantic Coast is one of the best for those who love a mix of history, quiet beach towns, and relaxed vibes.
Top Stops:
Start in St. Augustine, the nation’s oldest city, where cobblestone streets lead you to Castillo de San Marcos, the Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, and plenty of old-world charm.
Vilano Beach is just minutes away and offers a peaceful beach with a retro vibe.
Flagler Beach is a favorite for lunch or dinner—stop at the Funky Pelican, located right on the pier.
Before you reach Daytona, take the scenic detour through the Ormond Scenic Loop, a hidden gem filled with tree canopies, wildlife, and ocean views.
This drive is perfect for a day trip or a slow weekend getaway with plenty of stops to enjoy along the way.
3. Gulf Coast Drive – Clearwater Beach to Sarasota
White-sand beaches, walkable towns, and unforgettable sunsets—this drive along the Gulf of Mexico is full of charm and chill vibes.
Top Stops:
Begin at Clearwater Beach, where Pier 60 hosts a sunset celebration every night.
Consider a dolphin-watching cruise or paddleboarding in the calm Gulf waters.
Cruise through Indian Rocks Beach (pictured above) and Madeira Beach—both laid-back alternatives with beach bars, family-owned restaurants, and less-crowded shorelines.
St. Pete Beach is a great spot with live music, outdoor dining, and Pass-a-Grille’s historic district at the southern tip.

Stop at Airstream Row for quick eats or visit Modica Market for gourmet snacks.
WaterColor is known for its picturesque homes and charming boardwalks.
Alys Beach and Rosemary Beach offer stunning architecture, boutique shopping, and upscale dining options.
You don’t need to rush this drive. Take your time, hop on a bike, and explore these beautiful communities at your own pace.
5. A1A – Miami to Palm Beach
If you’re looking for a scenic drive where the Atlantic Ocean meets coastal luxury, this South Florida stretch is for you.
It’s a great combo of tropical landscapes, lively boardwalks, and elegant neighborhoods.

6. Big Bend Scenic Byway – Panacea to Apalachicola
Want to escape the crowds and experience authentic Old Florida?
The Big Bend Scenic Byway, located in North Florida, runs along undeveloped coastline and through charming fishing villages.
Top Stops:
St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge is a must-see for birdwatchers and nature lovers, especially the historic lighthouse.
In Panacea, stop at a local seafood spot such as Angelo’s for fresh oysters or deviled crab.
Carrabelle offers quiet beaches and a unique roadside attraction—the world’s smallest police station.
Apalachicola is one of the most underrated towns in Florida, filled with seafood markets, historic inns, and riverside views.

7. A1A – Jacksonville to Amelia Island
This Northeast Florida drive offers coastal forests, state parks, and a charming historic finish in Amelia Island.

Fort George Island and Kingsley Plantation offer a fascinating look into Florida’s early history with shaded trails and waterfront views.
